Cedar pollen is in the high count in the Austin area right now. If you aren’t sneezing…have itchy, watery eyes…overall feeling pretty miserable – then consider yourself one of the very select few who aren’t suffering from this potent pollen! But what exactly is cedar anyway? What is causing us all to feel so horrible? Let’s take a look…
I’m Sick and Tired of Feeling Sick and Tired!
According to a local news station, KVUE, “Experts say 90 percent of all allergy sufferers in Austin are allergic to cedar.” That’s a lot of cedar sufferers! I have heard Austin informally called the Allergy Capital of the World (not one of our many #1 titles that we like to promote too often). So that is a big statistic when you think about it. Cedar is a heavy duty pollen if 90 percent of those that are allergic to something are allergic to it!
KVUE goes on to explain a little more about where the cedar pollen originates. Apparently we all begin to suffer when tiny brown cones on the male mountain cedar trees “explode.” When this explosion happens (which many times looks like smoke because so much pollen is released), our head sometimes feels like it’s going to explode right along with the cones! The congestion, runny nose, watery eyes, and of course the sneezing follows very quickly after the “explosion” of the tiny cones. It’s hard to believe such a tiny thing can do so much damage!
Tips for Relieving Cedar Symptoms
There are several things you can try to alleviate allergy symptoms. Here are several:
- Antihistamines and decongestants
- Avoid prolonged outdoor exposure
- Take a shower after outdoor exposure
- Some people find allergy shots to be a great relief
