According to a local news station’s (KVUE) meteorologists, the cedar pollen count this past weekend saw some of the highest counts in 16 years! The pollen that was seen blowing in the wind looked like smoke. Allergists, Dr. William Howland and Dr. Allen Lieberman of the Allergy and Asthma Center of Austin, mention on their website that, “Newcomers to Austin may think there is a fire in the woods when they see the clouds of pollen blowing.” That’s a lot of pollen! And a whole lot of people suffering!
I’ve said before that your carpets are your biggest filter and they trap dust, dirt and of course all of that cedar pollen. And, that is still true. But, where else does all of that cedar pollen get trapped? In your air duct system!
If you are sneezing, have watery, puffy, red eyes, runny nose, headache, and congestion along with the rest of us…it might be time to clean out those air ducts. I’ve given some tips before on how to try to avoid “cedar fever” and I think they are worth mentioning again:
- Antihistamines and decongestants
- Avoid prolonged outdoor exposure
- Take a shower after outdoor exposure
- Some people find allergy shots to be a great relief
- Have your air ducts professionally cleaned
Benefits of Clean Air Ducts
According to the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA), there are two main benefits for air duct cleaning: indoor air quality and energy savings.
The NADCA suggests that “if your ducts look dirty, they probably are.” A typical home can accumulate up to 40 pounds of dust each year just through everyday living. Other common pollutants include dander and chemicals. In Austin, we can add allergens to this list as well. When you consider that these contaminants are recirculated several times per day, it’s easy to see why we might spend a good part of our days sneezing and feeling miserable.
The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that 25-40% of the heating and cooling energy used in a typical home is wasted. When your air ducts are dirty it can cause your system to work harder and less efficiently. Clean air ducts help your system work properly, use less energy, and make it easier to maintain room temperature.
